What is velvet and  the velvet industry?

Health Status

 Premier Deer Farm is located in the Shire of Boyup Brook, which is located at latitude 34 S and longitude 116W, or South West Western Australia.

This region is a highly productive agricultural area which is isolated from the Eastern States of Australia and the Northern parts of Australia by deserts. These deserts form a natural barrier against disease creating a disease free area. All animals coming into the state are tested negative for Tuberculosis and Brucellosis and certified free from Johnes Disease before entry is permitted. All animals from cattle  tick infested areas (Northern Territory and Queensland) must be sprayed or dipped with an approved acaricide immediately before movement and then held in a known cattle tick free area for at least 35 days immediately before movement to Western Australia.
Artificial insemenination

The collection centre is fully licensed and approved for export of embryos and semen. It fulfills all legal and quarantine requirements for the introduction of animals, collection of embryos and semen. This include the processing and storage of embryos and semen. The collection and quarantine areas are totally isolated from surrounding farms by a three metre buffer strip. A separate admission facility is provided for the admission of stock under test, prior to entry to the quarantine collection centre.

All animals that entered this centre were tested for Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, Leptospirosis and Johnes Disease. The disease free status is monitored and tested by our veterinarian. Premier Deer Farm has been a closed herd to live animals since 1992.

Animals within the collection centre are routinely vaccinated each year for the following diseases; Pulpy Kidney, Tetanus, Black Disease, Malignant Odema, Blackleg and Cheesy Gland. No other vaccination schedules are used

Anaplasmosis, Theileriasis and Babesiosis are tick-born tropical diseases. There have been no reported incidences of these diseases or the tick vector in the district.

Western Australia is Johnes Disease free, unlike Eastern Australia and New Zealand.

Australia is at the bottom of a major Asian Blue Tongue epidemic area. The South West of Western Australia is at the most southern and western extreme of Australia, being separated from the north and east by major deserts. This makes the area a very safe Blue Tongue free area.
